Mongolia moves to promote and protect children’s rights online

“Although, we emphasize online child sexual abuse and exploitation, we cannot forget about the opportunities that the Internet has to offer,” said Mr. Alex Heikens during the opening of the consultation “National multi-sectoral responses to prevent and tackle online child sexual abuse and exploitation.” ©UNICEFMongolia/2018/MungunkhishigB
ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia - Every half a second, a child goes online for the first time – tapping into all the great opportunities the Internet has to offer, along with its grave threats. Protecting children online is a challenge for every country. In Mongolia, children and young people are the most active and enthusiastic users of social media. The country stands on top in the region with around 94 percent of the pupils in Mongolia actively using Facebook. Statistics show that there are over 2 million users of Facebook in Mongolia.

Building a child-friendly community

Imagine a girl walking back home from school on a cold winter evening in the outskirts of the city. It’s already dark outside, and the road is only lit by the dim light of moon. Dogs are barking, yet nowhere to be seen. The road is dangerous for anyone, let alone children. Two years ago that was the reality for 15 year-old Batchimeg, on her way back home from school.

From the pile of letters, Munkhshur picks letter “Р” to complete the word “САР” which means “moon” in English. “I know how to spell many words. Do you want to see the others?” smiles Shuree, as her friends call her, eager to show what she has learned at school.

It was 11 o’clock in the morning at the “Ulziit Manal” family health center of the Songinokhairkhan district. An unusual site for a small family health center greeted us, a hall filled with crowd, as dozens of young people in their 20’s were lined up to get vaccinated against measles. 30 year-old Otgonbayar (Otgoo) was one of them.

Otgoo is a nomadic herder, and she lives with her husband in the Bayantsagaan village of Tuv province in central Mongolia. The couple has a 9 year-old daughter Munkh-Undral, who goes to school in Ulaanbaatar.

Few days ago, when the nationwide measles Supplementary Immunization Activity (SIA) campaign started, Otgoo received a call from her village health center doctor, as well as an SMS from the Ministry of Health and Sports that she need to be vaccinated

Helping children turn their lives around

A child in need of protection ©UNICEF/MGLA2007-00005/Holmes

When Bat (not his real name) was 14, he would run away from home a lot. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for longer. His older brothers would look for him and when they found him would bring him home and often beat him.
